Sitting at the computer I felt a gust of wind so strong I thought the roof was coming off the house or we all were going flying. I wish those strong winds from the SW were blowing warmer air but it is freezing cold air. Even Heidi was fooled as she completed her lap around the house after lunch ... yet her nose explored the yard by the inch as she walked.
Once again the sunshine in the morning forgot to mention just how cold it was outside this morning. That didn't matter to Sadie who was back behind my burn pile checking out recent deer scent and she never stopped tracking the rest of the walk. Stella on the other hand had no interest in taking a walk, nor tracking scent.
She is rarely outside long enough for any kind of photos to be taken of her, especially in January. She did a lap around the house today after lunch ... battling winds from the SW at 20mph and gusts up to 35mph. She was more than happy to sprint back to the couch as soon as I opened the door.

After a while it becomes pretty hard to post something new on this blog. I got tired of writing about weather, that's not what the blog is about. The hounds are the same, they follow their own routine as I do. There just isn't a lot going on here in late January. Even as I write this paragraph I have no idea what to write about.
The snow is gone, the temperatures move up and down for highs for the day ... yet it's always warm enough for 2-3 walks per day. Heidi still is in hibernation and that is normal. I may change this blogs template (theme) but it's hard to find other themes that provide photos as large and in this format.

Just because the bloodhounds and I thought it was a great weather day yesterday, didn't mean that Heidi agreed. Just after lunch she sprinted for the door to go out with all the rest of us. It's the daily routine and I thought it was warm enough that she might spend some time outside.

It's hard to describe how nice it feels to step outside for the walk and it doesn't feel like you are getting ready to cross the North Pole. I think the hounds agreed by the way the roamed the field this morning. While putting on my parka I decided that Stella would be on her own today, total freedom with zero verbal herding as I like to call it. She didn't disappoint. LOL

It didn't take long for things to feel like they were back to normal, me included. Sadie and Stella want to walk all the time. Sadie, Stella and Heidi want to eat all the time. It is still not warm enough for Heidi but I really believe if I were to let the bloodhounds out on their own, they would spend most of the day in the field.

Since I last posted there have been a LOT of changes. It's warmer and that's a good thing. ALL of the snow is gone. It's very really windy, the field is too saturated to take any walks and there is standing water in the gravel driveway in places and in the backyard. All is good and as soon as the field gets a little dryer in a day or two ... the hound walks will resume.

I think you will be able to tell the difference between the photos that were taken in the mid-afternoon compared to those late morning. We had no plans of walking anytime anywhere before mid-afternoon. By that time the temperature had climbed to 15° and with bright sunshine it felt warmer. Stella did not agree.
The past two days it has been -8° wind chill at 10am. Consequently all hounds walks were called off but they still need to get outside to relieve themselves. A little after 10am they were outside for almost twice as long as yesterday morning .. 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Heidi is still the smartest one of all of us and watches from the couch. This Arctic Weather will be gone in 4 hours when the heat wave of 19° arrives around 3pm.

Yes, there are other places where it is much more colder than here, their snow is deeper than here but as we stepped outside at 10am I could tell the temperature was brutal. WeatherBug was telling me it was -2° and a wind chill of -15° and we had no plans of staying outside long ... we were outside for 1 minute and 18 seconds.

It wasn't two hours ago that I posted "Not Interested" when I mentioned anything about walking in the snow, shoveling snow, watching the snow ... anything with snow. Yet when you live in "5 minute windows" like I do anything is possible. So .... Stella and Sadie were THRILLED that I changed my mind about going outside for a hound walk in the deep (deeper than we thought) snow.
I was up late, like very very late ... so we started the daily routine by me jumping out of bed to feed the hounds at the normal time, glance outside to see how bad it was then sprint back to bed. I know they told us a couple of inches of new snow by noon today so it wasn't that much of a surprise ... but looking at the hounds in the snow and how much of their legs disappeared ... it was deep.

Sadie started her "stare down" at me right after her breakfast. It's her way of 'begging' to go for a walk. It happens various times during the day if I am not on her schedule. I kept telling her "we are not going outside today, it's too cold" and she kept staring. At 9:30am it was up to 1° but with the bright sunshine the temps would creep up near 20° later this afternoon. She didn't know that would NOT change my mind about taking our half mile walk.
After about 4 hours of Sadie's 'stare down' to walk ... we went outside but not for a walk. Only the bloodhounds needed to relieve themselves. When they saw me put on my down parka they thought it was normal routine. On their own they realized it was too cold for any kind of walk. Without calling them, Sadie ran and Stella trotted back to the house. They last only 3 minutes and that shows how cold it is.

With the winds howling throughout the night I wasn't sure what I would see in the yard this morning. Luckily noting but pure white drifting snow blanketed the front and back yards. It wasn't suppose to be snowing this morning but by the time we took a short trip outside at 10:30am it was coming down hard.
We ended up getting a little over 3" of snow yesterday afternoon. With temps below freezing until next Thursday, it is not going anywhere and will not turn to slush until then. Of course Heidi couldn't believe that I was asking if she wanted to go on a walk. Stella thought she did but once that rear paw was held off the ground, I knew it was to cold. All hounds walks canceled until further notice.

It started snowing harder around 3pm Friday but it didn't look like we were going to get much more than an inch. I was wrong about how much snow we would get. I thought it might be a good time to get the 2nd walk in but after a few steps outside and that freezing strong wind hitting me in the face, I cancelled it.
Like many experienced last night all over the USA, the hot temps blew out with high winds and all that was left this morning were temps in the 20's and some light snow. That 62° was really nice yesterday. Yet we knew what was in the forecast, plus it really is January ... not March. Weather never bothers nor surprises the hounds, they just love to take their walks.
Luckily the hounds expected the drastic weather change. They are used to it. The bloodhounds and I took a walk this morning and will later today but Heidi came out only long enough to relieve herself. She started toward the yard but as soon as the snow touched her paws, she turned around and went to the door to be let back inside.
